The Lively family is one of Burke County's oldest families.

Abram Lively was a member of a Company of Scottish Highlanders that formed the Core of General Oglethorpe's forces that defeated the Army and Navy of Spain on 1742. Abram Lively was in the Battle of Bloody Marsh at St. Simon's Island. For these services a grant of land was given him by the King of England in Burke County's 68th District.

Abram Lively's son, Matthew Lively, was born in Burke County's 68th . District in 1750. He was a soldier in the War of 1812. He was a Methodist minister and helped form McBean Baptist Church and Mt. Zion Methodist Church. His wife was the former Miss Jane Boyd of Burke County.

George P. Lively was the son of the Rev. Mark Lively. He was born in Burke County, 66th District, June 29, 1844. He served with 'Fighting Joe', General Wheeler's small force of Cavalry. This small force turned Sherman's Calvary back at Waynesboro and Aiken, S.C. and saved Augusta. He later served as Burke County's Representative in the Georgia Legislature. He was a member of the Legislature when Georgia passed the first Prohibition Law. This was the main purpose of his mission to the Legislature.
